What are the SEO basics every new Shopify store should cover?
I don't want to hire an SEO yet, but what should I get right from day one so I don't dig a hole?

Cover the foundations and you'll be ahead of most stores. Give every product and collection a unique, descriptive title and meta description with the words buyers actually search; write real product descriptions (not the manufacturer's copy); use clear, keyword-sensible URLs; and add alt text to images. Make sure your store is fast on mobile and submit your sitemap in Google Search Console.
Then don't sabotage yourself later: avoid changing URLs without redirects, and don't bury products under endless thin collection pages. SEO compounds slowly, so getting these basics right at launch saves painful cleanup down the road. Deeper keyword and content strategy can come once you have traffic to learn from.
