What is different about a Shopify store selling food?
Delivery constraints. Perishable goods need date selection, delivery windows, postcode or zip restrictions and sometimes courier rules by product. Shopify does not do most of that natively, so it is either an app or a custom build, and it is the part to scope first.
Can Shopify handle delivery date selection?
Not natively. It needs an app or a custom implementation using line item properties for the date and checkout validation to prevent impossible choices. Getting the validation right matters more than the date picker.
How do I restrict shipping by postcode or region?
Shipping profiles cover broad zones. Per-postcode rules, courier restrictions by product, or cutoff times need Shopify Functions or an app. Functions are the better long-term answer because there is no monthly fee.
How should I handle allergens and nutrition?
As structured fields via metafields or metaobjects, not free text. Allergen information that lives in a description gets out of date in one product and nowhere else, which is the failure mode worth designing against.
Can I sell subscriptions for food and drink?
Yes, through Shopify's native subscription APIs via an app, or a custom build for unusual rules. Pair it with delivery scheduling from the start rather than bolting it on later.
How long does a food and drink store take to build?
