Why beauty is different
Beauty buyers are category-sophisticated. Your store has to be too.
Shade-matching and color complexity
Foundation, lipstick, hair color, shoppers need to see exact shades, often against their own skin tone. A theme without proper swatch displays, undertone metadata, or AR try-on integrations leaves conversion on the table.
Ingredient lists buyers actually read
Clean-beauty, vegan, cruelty-free, fragrance-free, allergen-free, these claims need to be on every product page in a scannable format. Themes without structured ingredient/cert support force the work into descriptions where buyers won't find it.
Regulatory disclaimers per jurisdiction
FDA disclaimers, EU allergen labeling, Health Canada NPN, California Prop 65 warnings, themes need to surface the right disclaimers based on shopper geography. Most don't.
Subscription + replenishment is the LTV driver
Beauty unit economics work on subscription and replenishment. A theme that treats subscription as an afterthought (instead of a first-class checkout option) leaves recurring revenue on the table.
Quiz funnels that convert browsers to buyers
Skin-type quizzes, routine-builders, undertone matchers, these are the highest-converting funnels in beauty. Themes without quiz-app integration (or worse, themes that load quizzes via iframes) cap your CVR.
Three ways to ship
Pick the path that fits your stage and budget.
Recto theme
Premium beauty theme, $199 one-time
Recto supports swatch displays, ingredient field structures, claims badges, and clean-beauty design patterns. Lifetime updates, free support.
Custom theme + quiz app
Bespoke beauty storefront + custom quiz, from $4,999
For brands where the storefront IS the experience, quiz-led routine builders, AR try-on, multi-step product configurators. We build the storefront and the quiz logic, native, not via iframe.
Migration + subscriptions
Migrate + add Shopify Subscriptions, from $2,999
Beauty brands often outgrow their first platform once subscriptions become the focus. We migrate to Shopify, wire up Recharge or Shopify Subscriptions natively, and preserve every existing subscriber relationship.

Shopify for beauty, answered
What does a beauty brand need from a Shopify store?
Ingredient and usage detail that is easy to scan, shade or variant selection that works on mobile, and subscription support if you sell anything consumable. Reviews matter more here than almost any category, so plan where they sit on the product page from the start.
How do I add subscriptions to a Shopify beauty store?
Through a subscriptions app using Shopify's native subscription APIs, or a custom build if your billing rules are unusual. Shopify handles the recurring payment contract itself, so the app manages the rules rather than the money.
How should I display ingredients and INCI lists?
As a metaobject referenced from each product, not free text pasted into the description. Defined once, updated once, consistent everywhere, and readable by search engines rather than buried in a tab.
Do I need shade swatches, and can a theme do them?
If you sell colour cosmetics, yes. Most premium themes support colour swatches natively through variant images or a swatch setting. Custom swatch behaviour, like matching to a skin tone selector, needs theme work.
What about compliance and claims on product pages?
Keep regulated claims out of templated content and in fields you control per product, so a change can be made everywhere at once. This is a strong argument for metafields over hand-written descriptions.
How long does a beauty Shopify build take?
A premium theme configured to brand is days to two weeks. A custom theme is 3 to 6 weeks. Adding subscriptions properly adds one to two weeks on top.
