Etsy to Shopify: the data moves, the traffic does not
The easiest migration to execute and the hardest to survive. Products move in a day. Etsy search traffic does not follow you, and no redirect exists, so the real project is demand, not data.

Short answer: Etsy to Shopify is the easiest migration to execute and the hardest to survive, because the hard part is not data. Products, customers and orders move in a day or two. The problem is that your Etsy traffic came from Etsy's search, and none of it follows you. Plan for a traffic cliff, keep the Etsy shop running during the transition, and budget the real work for demand generation rather than the move itself.
Every other migration we do is a technical problem. WooCommerce, Kajabi, Magento — messy data, redirect maps, URL structures, things that break.
Etsy is different. The export is small, the import is quick, and the whole thing can be done in a weekend.
Then the orders stop, and that is the part nobody prepares for.
What actually kills Etsy migrations?
On Etsy, buyers find you through Etsy. They search "personalised dog collar", Etsy shows them results, you are one of them. You did not build that demand and you cannot take it with you.
Your own Shopify store starts with no search visibility, no marketplace traffic and no built-in trust signals. A listing that sold ten a week on Etsy will sell zero on day one, because nobody knows the URL exists.
This is not a reason not to migrate. Etsy takes a transaction fee, a listing fee, a payment processing fee and increasingly an ads cut, and it owns the customer relationship. The economics of leaving are often compelling.
It is a reason to migrate with a demand plan, which is the work most people skip.
Do not close the Etsy shop. Run both. Etsy keeps paying the bills while the Shopify store builds its own traffic, which takes months, not weeks. Etsy's terms restrict linking directly to your own store from listings, so read the current policy rather than assuming — but nothing stops your packaging, your email list and your social presence from pointing at the new store.
Start collecting emails immediately, on Etsy, today. A physical insert in every order is the most reliable channel you have, and it works before the migration and after it. Etsy does not give you usable marketing consent for buyer emails, so build the list yourself while you still have the order volume.
Expect three to six months before the Shopify store carries meaningful independent traffic. Budget for it in cash flow, not just in optimism.
What moves and what does not?
| Moves | How | |
|---|---|---|
| Products, prices, images | Yes | CSV export, transform, import |
| Variations | Mostly | Remap to Shopify options; over 3 becomes metafields |
| Customer names and addresses | Yes | From order export |
| Customer emails for marketing | No | No transferable consent; rebuild the list |
| Order history | Yes | Import as historical records |
| Reviews | Partly | Etsy does not export them; some apps can help, many cannot |
| Star rating and review count | No | Starts at zero |
| Favourites and followers | No | Nothing to export |
| Etsy search ranking | No | Does not exist off Etsy |
| Listing URLs | No | No redirect is possible from Etsy |
| Shop policies and FAQs | Yes | Copy and paste |
The two rows that matter most are reviews and search ranking, and both are losses.
Reviews are social proof you earned and cannot take. Etsy has no review export. Some migration apps scrape or assist, with mixed results and questionable standing. The honest plan: launch with a review app installed, email past customers asking for a review on the new store, and accept that you start near zero. Import what you legitimately can, and be careful about republishing review text you do not have rights to.
Search ranking simply does not transfer. There is no redirect from an Etsy listing to your domain, so no link equity, no ranking signal, nothing. Your Shopify SEO starts from scratch.
The migration itself, step by step
1. Export from Etsy. Shop Manager → Settings → Options → Download Data. You get listings, orders and a sold-order items file as CSVs. Take all of them, including orders, since that is where customer addresses live.
2. Audit the catalogue before importing. Most Etsy shops carry listings that have not sold in a year. Migrating them moves clutter into a store where, unlike Etsy, there is no marketplace search to surface the long tail. Cut ruthlessly. Fewer, better product pages rank more easily.
3. Map variations to Shopify options. Etsy allows two variation types; Shopify allows three options with up to 100 variants each on standard plans. Usually straightforward. Personalisation fields — "enter the name to engrave" — are not variants at all and become line item properties, which needs a theme change or an app.
4. Transform the CSV. Etsy's export does not match Shopify's import format. Column names, variant row structure, image URL handling and tag formatting all differ. Do this in a spreadsheet or a script, and import ten products first to check the result before running the whole file.
5. Rewrite the descriptions. Etsy descriptions are written for Etsy's search and Etsy's reading pattern: keyword-loaded, long, no headings. On your own store they need structure, headings, and the answers a buyer asks before purchase. This is the single highest-value hour in the whole migration and it is always the one people skip.
6. Import customers and orders. Addresses and order history give you returning-customer segments from day one. Import them as historical records so your reporting is not distorted by dated revenue.
7. Set up the store properly. Shipping profiles, tax, payments, policies. Etsy did much of this for you and Shopify does not.
8. Launch quietly and test. Place real orders. Check the confirmation emails, the shipping rates at several destinations, and the personalisation fields end to end.
9. Tell your customers. Packaging inserts, email, social, and your Etsy shop announcement within Etsy's rules. This is the actual launch.
10. Only then consider winding Etsy down — and for most shops the answer is never fully. A marketplace presence and an owned store serve different buyers.
What to build instead of what to migrate
The technical migration is a few days. The gap between "the store exists" and "the store sells" is where the real project is.
Product pages that answer questions. Etsy listings assume Etsy's context. Yours cannot. Sizing, materials, turnaround, personalisation limits, shipping times, returns — all on the page.
A reason to trust you. No Etsy badge, no star rating, no marketplace umbrella. Reviews, real photos, a genuine about page, clear policies, visible contact details.
Email. The single biggest gain from leaving Etsy is owning the customer relationship. If you do not build the list, you have given up marketplace traffic and gained nothing in exchange.
Search content. Product pages alone rarely rank for a new domain. The content that brings people in is usually adjacent: how to choose, how to care for it, size guides, comparisons.
Paid, deliberately. A small, well-targeted spend to bridge the traffic gap is often the difference between a migration that works and one that gets reversed. Treat it as a bridge with an end date, not a permanent channel.
Is it worth it?
Yes, for most shops past a certain size, and the maths is straightforward.
Etsy's transaction fee, listing fee, payment processing and ads participation add up to a meaningful share of revenue. Shopify is a flat subscription plus payment processing. There is a crossover point, and above it you keep materially more of every sale.
Below that point, or if essentially all your demand is marketplace-driven and you have no plan to build your own, staying on Etsy is the rational choice. Leaving a marketplace with no demand plan is how a profitable shop becomes a quiet website.
Run the numbers on your own revenue before anything else. If the fee saving does not comfortably cover a year of building your own traffic, wait.

Frequently asked questions
How do I migrate from Etsy to Shopify?
Export your data from Etsy under Shop Manager → Settings → Options → Download Data, audit and cut the catalogue, transform the CSVs to Shopify's import format, rewrite descriptions for your own store, then import products, customers and order history. The technical work takes a few days. Keep the Etsy shop running while the Shopify store builds its own traffic.
Will I lose my Etsy reviews when I move to Shopify?
Yes. Etsy has no review export and your star rating does not transfer. Launch with a review app installed and email past customers asking for a review on the new store. Be careful about republishing review text you do not hold the rights to.
Will I lose sales moving from Etsy to Shopify?
Initially, almost certainly. Etsy traffic comes from Etsy's search and none of it follows you to your own domain. Expect three to six months before a new Shopify store carries meaningful independent traffic, and plan cash flow around that.
Should I close my Etsy shop after migrating?
Most shops should not. Etsy keeps producing revenue while the Shopify store builds its own demand, and a marketplace presence reaches buyers who will never find your domain. Run both unless the fees clearly outweigh the sales.
Can I redirect my Etsy listings to my Shopify store?
No. Etsy does not allow redirects from listing URLs, so there is no link equity or ranking signal to carry over. Your Shopify SEO starts from zero, which is why the content and demand plan matters more than the data migration.
Do Etsy customer emails transfer to Shopify?
Names and addresses come through the order export, but Etsy does not provide transferable marketing consent for buyer emails. Build your own list before and during the migration — a printed insert in every order is the most reliable method.
How do Etsy personalisation fields work on Shopify?
They are not variants. On Shopify they become line item properties, which requires a theme modification or an app to add the input field to the product page and carry the value through to the order.
How long does an Etsy to Shopify migration take?
The data move is a few days. Store setup, description rewrites and testing take two to four weeks. Building enough independent traffic to replace Etsy's takes three to six months, and that is the part to plan around.
